"It is loneliness that makes the loudest noise. This is true of men and dogs." If you read between the lines of this quote, it states that the loneliest people in the world are the most outgoing, loud people. They seek attention in each and every thing, much like how a lone wolf howls at the moon.
In the novella Of Mice and Men, Crooks the stable buck resembles a lone wolf. Being the only colored man on the ranch, he is neglected, and is forced to live among the horses. Nobody ever comes around to his little room in the back of the barn, except Lennie. "Sometimes he gets thinkin' an' he got nothing to tell him what's so an' what ain't so." (pg. 73) Crook says this to Lennie and explains that he is so alone, that he doesn't even have someone to tell him what's right and what's wrong.
Another lonely soul lurking around the ranch is Curly's wife. She spends her days roaming around the ranch looking for someone to talk to. She forced herslef to marry Curly when her mom crushed her dreams of becoming an actress. "What kinda harm am I doin' to you? Seems like they ain't none of them cares how I gotta live. I tell you I ain't used to livin' like this. I coulda made somethin' of myself." (pg. 88) Curly's wife says this because she knows that she had a choice of going to fulfull her dreams of becoming an actress, but instead she's stuck on a ranch with no one to talk to.
The last lonely person n the ranch is Candy. Candy is an old man, with a missing hand. His only companion is an old dog. The men on the ranch take it upon themselves to kill the old dog themselves. "I ought to have shot that dog myself George. I shouldn't have let stranger shoot my dog." (pg. 61) Candy feels bad that the last person his dog saw was a stranger. Candy should have been the one to shoot his dog.
